Bullet Train

rating:4/5

On the last day in China, we took the bullet train back to Shanghai. Most of us were very excited since it was our first time taking the train. So, we were all chit-chatting in the train among our own cliques, forgetting that we are still, in fact in a public area and that we may disturb others. As a result, another passenger had actually complained to the tour guide that we were too noisy, and asked us to quiet down. Thus, we have realize that maybe the people in Shanghai were also living in a fast paced environment, so they treasure the hours on these transportations to take a nap. From this, we can revise on one of the earliest values we have learnt and that is being a considerate person. Sometimes, we may get too carried away in our own activities such that we may take some things for granted. Since it is ok to buzz around in Singapore mrt trains, we didn't realize that our actions may actually bring trouble to others. However, the train itself is very comfortable and interesting. We can turn our chairs 180 degrees around to face our friends and then we will be able to talk and play around more comfortably. The train is also very different from Singapore's mrt trains. The seats were arranged in horizontal formations, which allowed more seats for the passengers. However, the seats in mrt trains were arranged in vertical formation, which allowed more passengers to be able to board the train. There are both advantages and disadvantages in both arrangements, which are also affected by the duration of the ride.

The Maglev bullet train which we took back to Shanghai. The bullet train is very different as compared to our Singapore's MRT since their train station is a lot more bigger than Singapore's. Also, we realized that the bullet are very punctual on the timing they stated on the train tickets. There would not be any delay in the arrival time of a train at a station. The sounds produced by the bullet train when it travels is also a lot quieter as compared to Singapore's MRT. Generally, we find the train ride in the bullet train comfortable and smooth.

Dong Guan JIe

rating : 4/5

In this whole overseas trip, we went to Dong Guan Jie twice. We can say that it is one of the activities we enjoyed the most of this whole trip, since it is the first time we were shopping alone In a foreign country. This is a street consisting of many shops selling all kinds of things. According to one of our Chinese friend there, Dong Guan Jie is a very popular shopping street among the area, just like how popular is Orchard Road. The shops sell a large range of products, take for example, there are many shops selling food, fabrics, pretty accessories, soft toys etc. Furthermore, Dong Guan Jie sells these products at quite a cheap price. Therefore, many of us enjoyed the time we'd spent shopping and ended up spending quite a lot of money. From this street, we had get to know some of their food culture, like the Chinese Sugar Painting and also we have learned that one of their special local product is called 牛皮糖.

The gateway of Dong Guan Jie. As we walked pass the gateway of the Dong Guan Jie, there was a glass panel where plants grew beneath it. It was rather interesting as we wondered do people water and trim those plants.
Shop by the streets of Dong Guan Jie. Those small shops which tend to specialise in one type of product and this ranges from tea to make up and from chewy sweet cakes to souvenirs. The souvenirs there were very cute and were sold at a much cheaper price compared to Singapore.

The bund

Rating 4/5

The bund is a waterfront area in central Shanghai. The area centres on a section of Zhongshan Road within the former Shanghai International Settlement. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. This is where the new meets the old. as he government have well preserved the old buildings there. By walking along the bund brings out a modern feel while looking at the old buildings, despite the fact that it is a preserved cultural heritage area. there is also a war momentum to remember the people who died in the three wars in china - the opium war, the civil war and the world war two. this momentum allowed me to remember those people who sacrifice for their china. the scenery there was splendid, with the cooling wind blowing towards me. there were also quite a few skyscraper located on the opposite of the Huang Pu Jiang. Those skyscrapers have special meaning to it. for example, one of them looks like a beer opener. we were told that during the japanese occupation, the japanese wanted to have their flag there, but the chinese disagreed and decided to cut it to be a rectangle, forming the current shape of the building. The bund is very clean with alot of visitors. it is a good place to relax and forget stress for the short period of time.

the war momentum which reminds us of the main three wars which chin had been through - opium war, Chinese civil war and the World War Two. It also reminds me about the brave people who.risked and sacrificed their life for their country. Without them, china would not be able to come this far, with advanced technology and modernization.
Those are the buildings on the opposite side of the Huang Pu Jiang. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower can be seen on the opposite side and also the Jin Mao Tower.Being one of the Top Ten Shanghai Attractions.
There were many old European styled buildings along the bund. During the period of foreign aggression in the past, many foreigners settled down in China, and thus built buildings which has their culture in it so that there will be some sense of belonging.

Tian Zi Fang

rating: 4/5

From this place, I saw old architecture buildings, part of the French Concession, as I walked along the small lanes. The place was preserved and renovated partially, yet it still gave us the feeling of walking along a historical site due to its old buildings and the cables hanging overhead. I also learnt from the tour guide, that it was named after an artist. Even though it was an old and historical location, handmade craft works and tea leaves were still sold there. Modern small businesses as such were opened there, making tianzifang a popular tourist attraction. For example, traditional food were sold there along the street sides while on the other hand, there were foreign bistros opened nearby. Through this, I can see that we can incorporate the old and the new together, improving tourism and preserving culture which is both beneficial for the country. Therefore, I feel that tianzifang is a good location for both the tourism industry and for educational purposes as tourists would be able to admire the historical buildings while they are doing their shopping, and children would be able to learn and see for themselves how French Concession building architecture were like in the past and the kind of houses people in the past used to live in.

The small lanes and buildings of this place are generally quite old but there was still quite a lot of tourists that visited this place. We found the lanes of this place quite confusing since some of us almost got lost but the shops there sells a lot of interesting things such as souvenirs and special products that can rarely be found in Singapore.

Zhu Zi Qing resident

rating: 3/5

As the alley was narrow and quite worn out, with moss growing on its brick walls and weathering conditions clearly showing on the walls, it gave us the feeling of walking along an old and historic street. The zhuqizing residence was located along the narrow alleys in Yangzhou. The alleys still had people residing in the houses along it.The zhuziqing residence was a small house along of the street, now with a brass plated sign board to clearly state the history if the zhuziqing residence. As we step past the doors, we were greeted by an enlarged version of a few excepts of the essays zhuziqing had once wrote. The house was a small one, which was surprising giving zhuziqing's family background about having many siblings and descendants. But as the front and the rooms of the house were given an olden look, there was also a small modern museum at the back of the house, displaying zhuziqing's works, his life and his family's history. I find the experience quite interesting and enriching as we were allowed to visit the house of a famous essayist and was able to learn more about him. The idea of having an olden place to look at first before visiting the small museum at the back of the house was appealing as it allowed us to have a taste of how the house had been in the past while later on looking at the more modern display of his essays in the museum.

a room in Zhu Zi Qing resident. The resident is rather small but it showcased alot of important information about Zhu Zi Qing and his love towards the country.

Daming temple

rating: 4/5

The daming Temple is a temple in which many scholars come to pray to the gods in heaven before their exams to pray for a good score. It is an area of spiritual beliefs which contains part of the Japanese culture in it too. The daming temple, although it was a place of prayers, it is also opened to the tourists to visit due to its nice scenery, being on a mountain. It also has a Buddhist pagoda, called the Xiling Pagoda within its walls. This pagoda was also opened to tourists to visit the top and to admire the scenery from the top of the pagoda. I find the daming temple an interesting place and would enjoy more time at the daming temple. It was a fascinating historical location as it's architecture was old but maintained. The place had a calm spiritual feel to it, it's history lasted all the way back to the Ming Dynasty. I feel that the daming temple is a good location for students to learn more about how Buddhism had improved the Sino-Jap cultural relationships. It was a very interesting place and I would like to give that place a visit again.
